Disposal of your hardware

We all have that one computer or old hard drive from within sitting in a corner collecting dust. Whether you have no idea what to do with it or it is a handy door stop, it’s good to know how to dispose of your hardware correctly and responsibly.

Your main concern should be your data. You do not want others accessing your old hard drives with your sensitive information on them. Don’t think that deleting your data is wiping it because it can still be accessed by those who know what to do.  The best way to destroy these completely is by pulling apart your hard drive and destroying the shiny disks inside. Note that the magnets inside your hard drives are super strong so great for around the home.

If you are really worried about your data being accessed and you can’t pull apart your hard drive you can always drop into your local computer store who could offer secure disposal services to be on the safe side.

Now that you have taken care of the most critical part of your computer you are left with all the others that are out dated or broken. You have a few options as to how you can safely dispose of these:

  1. Through your local council waste depot in your area

  1. Heathfield has a waste recycling depot located on Scott Creek Road that takes Computer parts with no charge associated.

  1. The Windmill Hill Waste Transfer Station located on Nixon road, Hahndorf (next to Mount Barker district dump) will also take computers free of charge.

  1. Check with your local schools, they may want some for students to either practice pulling apart or using parts for art projects.

We recommend that you do a bit of research yourself before opting to dispose or sell your computer second hand.  You could utilise some social media sites to see if anyone is interested in a second hand computer or computer parts. Ultimately you need to ensure you are comfortable to pass on your computer hard drive.
