Handy Shortcuts

How many of you have sat there in awe after watching a younger person using their computer?  They just seem to wiz through things and know all these shortcuts using their mouse or keyboard.

Time to learn the most common secrets used.

There are shortcuts using your mouse:

  • Left click and hold while you drag to highlight items

  • Right click on your screen to bring up hidden menu’s

  • You can then select to copy/paste/print/personalise/etc. within that application

  • Middle click (try pressing your scroll wheel down!) on internet links

  • When in your internet browser middle click on any links and they will open in a new tab, enabling you to keep your original page.

And shortcuts using keys on your keyboard:

  • Ctrl + C will enable you to copy highlighted items

  • Ctrl + X will enable you to cut highlighted items

  • Ctrl + V will paste last copied/cut items

  • Ctrl + Z will undo last actions

  • Ctrl + Y will redo the undo

  • Alt + Tab enables you to switch between programs open on your computer

  • Ctrl + delete whole words at a time instead of single characters

  • Ctrl + Home or End will take you to the start or end of the page

  • Ctrl + S will save your document

Labelled keys on your keyboard:

Print screen key enables you to take a snap shot of your screen, so when you get those nasty error messages you can click on this button then Ctrl + V into a word doc.

You can also use your function keys F1-F12 as shortcuts, but I think I will talk about this next time as these differ per device.

I hope these shortcuts have helped you, if you’re still not too sure then why not book in to a one on one training session with your computer specialist and they can help you guide your way around your computer better.
