3d in technology.

I’m sure most of you understand what 3d means, three dimensional images and shapes. 3d gives the perception of depth and allows things to pop to life.

We recently wrote about the new virtual reality headsets which provide 3d worlds you can be immersed in whilst wearing the headset. Well technology also allows you to print 3d models.

Businesses and researchers have been using them for quite some time to help manufacture and create things to help benefit us.

However, did you know 3d printers are available for home. They aren’t as expensive as some of you would think. For example XYZprinting produce 3d printers for consumers from $250 RRP, so not really that much more than a normal printer.

A 3d printer works a little like a hot glue gun but operated by a smart computer that follows the pattern from the model you want to print. There are two main types of 3D printers on the market, FFM (fused filament manufacturing) and SLA (stereo lithography). FFM printers work by melting a plastic filament in a heated printhead form the model. SLA printers use an ultraviolet (UV) laser to solidify a resin, focusing the laser to form the solid model. FFM printers are generally cheaper, simpler and easier to use. Some of the more expensive 3d printer models allow you to engrave as well as 3d print.

So, I hear you ask, what can you use a 3d printer for at home, well all sorts of things. If you go to www.thingiverse.com there are lots of FREE models you can print. The options are endless.  Iseek computing have an XYZ 3d printer on demo in store and recently printed a Nespresso pod holder for their new coffee machine, very handy!

Iseek have posted a few different videos of the 3d printer in operation, check it out its very mesmerizing to watch actually. https://www.facebook.com/pg/iseekcomputing/videos/?ref=page_internal

Do your research as it depends on what you think want to print as to which 3d printer you buy and as always, if you need more advice, don’t hesitate to contact your local IT professional.
