Ways to safeguard your data

We have yet another Cryptolocker doing the rounds yet again in another form of “AGL bill”. Cryptolocker is a serious virus that will ‘lock’ your files and demand a ransom. For most variants of this virus, there is no work around. This is a reminder that, the best prevention to be effectively protected from this latest attack, you should ensure that you:

  • NEVER open ZIP files or executable documents that are unexpected.

  • Don't open any attachments if you're not sure of their origin.

  • Be suspicious of ALL emails (even from friends and colleagues) make sure there is no extension at the end of their email address.

  • Make sure your Microsoft Windows Updates are done.

  • Have an effective Antivirus or Malware program that is UP TO DATE.

Lastly, although these steps go a long way, they are not 100% in all scenarios. It is important that you perform a backup of your data regularly to ensure that if you do have an issue with your PC, you do not lose your data.

In line with this, do not leave external backup drives or USB’s plugged into your device, because if they are plugged in when your device is affected, they may also be impacted.

If you’re not sure that your backups are working, if you have been affected by a virus, or if you need more advice, don’t hesitate to contact your local IT professional.
