What is an app?
In our last column we talked about apps. But what are they, and why do people always talk about them?
In short an App is a software application (software program). But an app is not just any old software program - it’s a special type of software program.
An app typically refers to software used on a smartphone or mobile device such as the Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or iPad, as in “mobile app” or “iphone app.”
But the phrase “Web app” or “online app” is also used in a business setting as an abbreviation for “Web application” or “online application” — meaning software that you access and use while online, via a browser, instead of software residing on your computer (such as Microsoft Word).
Why should I care about them?
Web apps or online apps can be faster, cheaper and more efficient way of distributing software throughout a business. Rather than purchasing outright and having the program installed onto a server, which takes time to set up then install on surrounding devices and activate. You can sign up online for an account and have the program within minutes.
Another benefit is that it is usually only a monthly fee and not an upfront fee. This does work at home also.
If you have a home full of devices that all use the same programs instead of purchasing multiple copies of the same software. Install the app at home which can have multiple licences under 1 monthly payment.
Mobile apps are commonly used due to mobile devices being so commonly used over a desktop or tablet. So it is beneficial to have not only the application installed on your desktop or notebook, but also on your mobile device or tablet to maximise the usage of each product.
Most of us are most probably already using a few common apps on our devices now without realising it. Weather, google maps, banking and Pinterest to name a few. There are lots to choose from to help make your computing experience easier. Some of the apps will be free and some have a small upfront fee, but once you have it you will love how easy it will make things for you.
