The Potential of your home network

As people who work in the computer industry, we sometimes take for granted the small things that make using our computers and our network much easier.

This day and age there is always multiple ways to do the same thing, and while some of those ways are long and hard, some are much shorter and can make using your computer more efficient.

For example, just consider some of the following options to help make life a little easier when using technology these days:
1. Multiple monitors.

As computers become more and more advance, multitasking becomes very easy, and nearly second nature, to most of us. But there is one way to make it MUCH easier for you as well.

Having multiple screens!

You can have a movie open while you check your email, and can have both at a size easy to view. For those with bookwork, having your online banking open on one and your accounting program in the other means you can compare and update both side-by-side, without switching back and forth.

2. Internal sharing.

These days people store more and more on their devices, and sometimes it’s nice to show others what you have; but as people have more and more devices within the same home, sometimes that one document or holiday photo album is just not on the device you want. Instead of putting them on a USB and handing it around, it’s much easier to setup a network share.

Essentially, you nominate a device in your home as the facility for sharing, and you store your information on that device. You can then tell it to “share” the contents of one or more folders to other devices on your network. That means as long as you save your documents or photos to that folder, they can be accessed by any of your devices within your home.

3. Using your TV

Most people have recorded movies or pictures stored on a computer or laptop. These days, if you have a HDMI port on both your computer and TV, you can transmit both audio and video over the one cable. If you would rather a central location for your home movies and pictures, you can purchase a media player which you can use to store them, which also plugs in via HDMI. This can then be shared around to family members or used on other TV’s.

4. Synchronized email and folders

Another new thing you can do is synchronize emails and folders between multiple devices. For example, you can have your emails and documents on your computer at home. With a few tweaks and programs, you can get your phone or tablet to “sync” with your computer over the internet. That means wherever you are, you can have access to the same documents you would if you were at home.

We hope some of these tips have helped to streamline your processes at home or work.  As always please don’t hesitate to contact your local computer store who can assist with any of your IT issues.
