Why do I need a Microsoft account?

A Microsoft account is the email address and password that you use to sign into your, Xbox, Outlook, Windows 8 or 8.1, Skype, Find my phone, One drive and Office 365.

This one account for all these different programs or devices will enable you to purchase apps, games or music with your phone or Windows 8 PC. You can also use it to back up things from your phone ready to transfer to a new phone or link your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts to the People Hub to make it accessible from one location.

When you back up images from one device, they will be viewable on another once you have signed into the account. It synchronises your Wi-Fi passwords, shopping lists, skype messages, emails, contacts and calendars from one device to another.

If you want to use apps or Microsoft based services, you will need a Microsoft account. This doesn't mean you need a new email; you can use your existing email account to register with Microsoft. Best of all, the account is free!

If you are using a Windows 8 device or above, why not register your Microsoft account with them to gain access to all of these extra features?

As always, if you need more advice, don’t hesitate to contact your local IT professional.
