How do I keep my notebooks battery in good health?

You can help prolong the life of your batteries in your devices if you take care of them.

You may have heard about “Draining your battery” to prolong its life. Or keeping it between 40% and 80% charge all the time to make it last longer. These are both true. For older batteries that are nickel based.

For newer battery’s which are generally Lithium Iron they are easier to take care of. They last longer if you perform smaller discharges (reaching 50% and recharging) rather than running down to 5% and recharging. Also if you unplug the adapter once the battery reaches 100% charge allows it to cycle through. It also important to keep the battery cool as excess heat can damage it permanently or reduce its life span.

As with most technology devices we own these days, batteries all have a life span. Generally manufactures have 12 month warranty on batteries, this is because that is what they deem as their lifespan.  Keep this in mind when purchasing your next device. The good thing is that you can replace this part and extend the life of your device. Maybe research how much it would be to replace this part and factor this into the ongoing maintenance required to run it.

Take your batteries out from time to time, if you have a removable one, and dust it out. This will ensure that the contact points a clear. Remember your computers need a little TLC to keep them running at optimum performance, the same as your cars.
