NBN, have you changed over yet?

Some of us would have already been approached by NBN to schedule in your pending change, some of you may not, and some of you are already on it. (Lucky you)

NBN have announced that EVERYONE will be on the NBN network by 2020. It is not an option but the future of the internet.

So if we HAVE to move to it what should we be doing in preparation, well this will depend on your current situation. Here is a short list of things you should consider before signing across to the NBN:

  • Know your current setup at home or in the office

  • If possible find out from your current provider what your current usage is so you can determine what bandwidth you need to sign up for

  • Do you have emergency call out on your current phone line

  • Do you use your phone lines for your PABX

  • How does your email get delivered/where is your email server

  • Do you use remote access to other sites

  • Is there a need for a firewall

  • Do you need to restrict sites staff/customers/students can visit

  • Do you need to report on internet usage for work purposes

There are various plans out there and having knowledge of your existing account can help you discuss the most suitable options for your needs with your existing or new service provider.

If you are a business or rely on the internet to survive then you may want to think about backup internet. So if there are issues with your NBN changeover you can still have some form of internet access in case. If you have multiple lines into your premises then only get one changed over and preferable the lesser one. We recommend that business communicate with their IT professional and let them know in advance when the planned NBN will happen. That way you will have a professional with the knowledge and expertise to talk the talk with the NBN installer on the day, better still get them to manage the changeover from the start.

If you can man yourself with a little more information for the pending phone call from NBN the easier it will be and less stressful for you.
