Computer Buying Guide

There are so many options flooding the market, where do you start? Buying a computer is becoming harder and harder.  These are the options currently available to consumers:

Notebook Computer(Laptop) – portable computer which consists of two parts which fold together to create a secure portable device - computer components are housed under the keyboard and mouse and a monitor is attached.

2 in 1 Notebook – notebook and tablet in one. These devices are comparable to a notebook device, they just have the option of working in tablet form or connect to a keyboard to make it a notebook computer

Desktop Computer – separate components - box containing brain and storage, monitor required to display data/images, keyboard and mouse for operation purposes, speakers if not built in to monitor.

All-in-One Computer – a computer which is housed within the monitor and has separate keyboard and mouse. Essentially these are built like a notebook but within a large screen format.

Tablet – compact tablet screen equipped with a stylus and or a touchscreen. These can be Windows/Android or Apple devices.

Now you know your options you need to ask yourself some questions:

  1. What do you want to use the computer for?

  1. Do you want touch screen capabilities?

  1. Will you need to travel with the device?

  1. Do you need to run specific program’s/software?

  1. Do you have the software or will you need to purchase some?

  1. How often will you be using it?

  1. Do you need to connect to the internet?

  1. What is the price point you are willing to invest?

These are just a few questions you need to ask yourself in preparation to finding the right device for you.  Once you have these answers then you can create a specific list and get some comparisons for exactly what you need.

You can choose from many brands and models and can purchase computers online, at retail stores or have one custom made.  Many customers we see these days are getting caught up in the pricing war that is happening online and also instore.  While the prices are very tempting ensure that you are getting an adequate device for your needs. Otherwise you may be disappointed with your purchase in 6 months’ time if it is not providing the long-term functions you required.

Technology is always changing and faster and better components are being added to computers quarterly.  In general, the IT industry releases new model notebooks every 3 – 6 months.  The core component of a computer is generally updated every 12 months, always releasing new models to keep up with the consumer demands and having the latest technological advances.

To make sure that you are purchasing what you really need we recommend that you go to your local computer specialist. They have the experience and can point you towards what would best suit your needs in today's current market.
