Setting up a new computer

You’ve just purchased a new computer. FANTASTIC! But what do you need to do now to ensure you are protected and up to date? 

Buying a new computer shouldn’t be daunting, but there are some things you need to do before you can use it for the first time. It’s not a matter of just taking it out of the box, you will need to do the following: 

• Turn it on - activate your device, following the manufactures guide provided in the box 

• Create Recovery CD’s - Usually you will be asked to back up the operating system right from the beginning. If for any reason you need to revert back to factory settings on your device or somehow lose you operating system, these RCD’s will be your saviour. 

• Internet connection – you will need to connect your computer to your internet 

• Windows updates - as soon as you pull that packaging off get started on these updates as they could take a few minutes. They could take hours depending on how long the device has been sitting on the retail shelf. 

• Set up antivirus - Whether you’ve purchased a new antivirus or have an old one with a few spare licences or months left to go. Get that onto your PC once you have finished with your updates. 

• Install browser - Whether it be Google Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. 

• Transfer your data – Photos, videos, documents and publications can now be transferred to your new computer 

• Software new or old - Set up your software and remove unwanted software. 

• Email – setup your email and ensure your address book is there 

• External connections - connect to printer, external Hard drive, cameras, etc  

Now you have your new computer do you need to consider upgrading your accessories, upgrade to a wireless keyboard and mouse these are also handy if you own a notebook. Is it time to upgrade your monitor, you can add a second one even. Check to see whether you still need that webcam; or whether your new device supports USB 3.0 or USB C, you may need to upgrade your cables if this is the case.
